ECOMART APPLICATION

Product Design, Brand Visual Design
2025
2nd place

The 2 Day designation challenged Ruka Yaga and me to create an application that allows users to exchange items they already own with others at no cost, fostering community and helping reduce the environmental impact of buying new supplies only to use them for a given semester.

Research & Goals

“The textile industry sends 40%  of waste to landfills, and with textiles taking 200+ years to decompose.”

To design a free trading platform for students that prioritizes bartering to reduce waste, based directly on user research findings.

User Survey

Bartering as a Sustainable Alternative

While students actively source second-hand items (96.8% from thrift stores, 74.2% online), there was no dedicated platform for bartering

The research also identified critical user requirements: User Profiles & Ratings (93.5%) and In-App Messaging for negotiation (80.6%) were deemed essential for building trust and facilitating trades.

Idea & User FlowBased on the survey, main features were identified that users will be required to interact with, and a low-fidelity sketch was drafted that uses cards, visual maps of events and trades happening in the area.

HOME:
A dual-feed view with Community Events (71% interest) & Individual Trade Listings.

MAP:
Spatial view of nearby tradable items to encourage local, low-friction exchanges.

CREATE (+): Central, prominent call-to-action for users to easily list an item for trade.

MESSAGES:
Dedicated space for the crucial negotiation phase identified in research.

PROFILE:Hosts user ratings for trust and introduces mini-gamification (e.g., "Eco-Points" for trades) to incentivize participation in a non-monetary ecosystem.

BrandingDue to time constraints, we used AI for placeholder assets such as avatars & the eco-points system that users are able to collect
